
The village of Calpe is another lovely part of the Costa Blanca and not to be missed. Still holding its fishing village charm along with a bustling port where every afternoon the fish auction takes place. Guaranteed you will be served fresh fish in all the local restaurants.
Approx 20/25 minute drive just north of Altea this former little fishing village sits at the base of (Rock of Ifach)
Peñon de Ifach is the biggest single rock in the Mediterranean. This has been a nature reserve since 1987 it actually works like a cover/shelter to a vast number of rare plants and sea birds.
The adventurous tourist may like to trek up the path leading to the peak. When you reach the top you will find that you are standing at the height of 330 metres. If trekking is not for you then enter into the tunnel which you will find leads up to the summit. On reaching the top expect to be taken back with the breathtaking fabulous views of this part of Spains neighbouring villages. Views of the tranquil countryside really are quite something.
On a clear day Ibiza is visible.
The beaches here are very safe and expect to find facilities like you would on any other of Benidorm beaches. Water sports include sailing surfing and if you want to go the depths then you have local diving centres at hand.
The seafront promenade is lined with bars cafes and restaurants serving wide choices of dishes/meals to please all palettes. Calpe fiestas are very special to the locals and exciting to the tourists so be sure to make a record of these dates in your diary
Feast of St. Joseph -Mar 19th (Fallas de San José)
Large statues carved out of wood or card are set alight at midnight on Mar 19th to celebrate the feast of St Joseph (Beginning of Spring) Fiesta type processions parade through the streets of the old town of Calpe. Firework displays to take your breath away and for all gatherers a slice of the giant paella washed down with a glass of Sangria.
Christians and Moors Festival (Morosy Cristianos) 21st Oct to the 24th
Christians and Moors festival Cristo del Sudor’ are celebrated at the same time. Ancient sayings have it that Santisimo Cristo del Sudor protected the village of Calpe as the Moors tried to gain access.
This occasion is special where two battles are re-enacted along or on the beaches with a specially built mock castle to make the event even more realistic. Action from start to finish.
